David Desmond, founding farmer:
I grew up in Pennsylvania, playing baseball, swimming and never having a thought about agriculture. I attended college at Penn State and began to take some soil classes in my senior year. Having no idea what I wanted to do after college I decided to hike the Appalachian trail because I figured, how hard could it be? It wasn't easy but it turned out to be one of the defining events of my life. Hiking day after day for almost 7 months allowed me to think about the meaning of life and to know for sure that I wanted to be outside, whatever I did. I moved to the Northwest and started Lost Creek Farm in 2003. It was slow going, but in 2006 I began farming full time. I feel that growing healthy food while decreasing the environmental cost of dinner is the most fulfilling and enjoyable thing I can do.
